mt. vernon

Young George Washington was a Lt. Colonel by the time he was 22 years old

Mt. Vernon has been recommended to us many times and by many different people, as a place we "have to see" before we leave. I scored a really great deal on tickets on Groupon back in November and we finally took some time to cash them in. And we picked a really nice day for a visit too. While it began a little windy and with a chill in the air, it warmed up nicely where the kids even had to shed their jackets.

Who knew that the Mt. Vernon property still maintained a fully functioning farm with animals. Hana and Evan could not get enough of the little piggies who were sunbathing with their mom.
And the museum was a definite highlight. Here's Hana by one of Martha Washington's traditional outfits. I almost think Hana could fit it. The most unique thing on display- George's dentures. They were not allowed to be photographed. Did you know that by the time he was inaugurated he only had one good tooth left?

We took the tour of the mansion. It's going through some reconstruction but we were able to see the rooms the Washington's used for dining, sleeping {although the master bedroom was empty due to water leakage}, guests, and work. The colors chosen for the rooms were quite drastic for my taste but I'm sure are indicative of the time period.

Then, we grabbed lunch at the Mt. Vernon Inn. A great meal! Surprisingly the biggest hit was the pulled pork sandwich that Hana ordered. It was so big, we all got to have a nibble and didn't even make a dent in it.

Well the local folks were all right...Mt. Vernon was a definite "have to see". I would love to do it again around the holidays because I understand it is decorated beautifully.
